Manchester City vs Fulham – Match Preview

Defending Premier League champions Manchester City find themselves with a small bit of work to do at present as they find themselves two points off the top of the table. Should results go their way earlier in the day then they could go on to leapfrog leaders Liverpool.

However, Pep Guardiola will know that regardless of what goes on between Tottenham and Liverpool come Saturday lunchtime his star-studded squad still have a job of their own to carry out. One that comes in the shape of a visiting Fulham side.

Manchester City faced Newcastle at the Etihad in their last fixture before the international break and although they eventually came out on top thanks to a fantastic second half strike from Kyle Walker, they certainly had to work for all three points.

You could perhaps accuse City of showing levels of complacency, especially when going in front early on after a well taken effort from Raheem Sterling. That said it was quite apparent that they were stirred up after a half time team talk from manager Guardiola.

This time around he will have to make sure that City are on the ball from the start as promoted outfit Fulham certainly have the players to take full advantage of any lapses in concentration as they look to extend their solid start to the campaign.

Their last outing was a trip to the South Coast as they faced Brighton at the AMEX. A game that saw them earn a point for their efforts, and although it is one to add to their early tally they will be disappointed that they did not make it all three.

After finding themselves two goals to the good thanks to goals from German international Andre Schurrle and Serbian forward Aleksander Mitrovic, they were then eventually pegged back thanks to a late Brighton rally after their talisman Glenn Murray bagged a brace.

Manager Slavisa Jokanovic knows that games such as the trip to Brighton are the ones were points will realistically be picked up over the course of a season, while visits to places such as the Etihad resemble more of a free hit.

Fulham have been very easy on the eye in their first four fixtures of the season as they find themselves in 13th in the table. They have picked up four points from as many matches, although their performances on the whole have arguably deserved more.

However, they can’t look back and bemoan the fact that they have not adding to their haul as they have a particularly difficult task to prepare for this weekend. Manchester City will be confident of making this a third home win of the season especially with the players that they have at their disposal.

The only saving grace that Fulham is the fact that City’s Champions League campaign starts in midweek and therefore key players may well be rested with that in mind. Even so, you would imagine the hosts have enough in the tank to earn a relatively comfortable home win.
