Palmeiras to continue unbeaten run
Palmeiras are undefeated in five of their last six matches. Their form over the long haul of the Brasileiro has been consistent. The club has lost just four times and three of those losses were suffered during its dip in form in May.
Vasco da Gama go into the fixture having lost two straight matches. They are just one point above the relegation zone. Manager Ze Ricardo has had little go right this term as his team has allowed the second most goals (25) in the Brazilian Serie A.
The two clubs have been split in wins over their last six games. Both have won twice while drawing twice over that six-game span. Sunday’s fixture will be the first time Palmeiras and Vasco have met in the 2018 Brasilian Serie A. Last season, Palmeiras were undefeated against Vasco. Manager Felipao, who took over Palmeiras on August 3, will hope his team can replicate its 4-0 home win over Vasco from a year ago.
Vasco have to go all the way gback to 2015 to find the last time they won against Palmeiras. That 2-0 win seems like a lifetime ago. While Ze Ricardo’s team has been unable to defend, posting the second worst goals conceded record in Brasilian Serie A, the attack has performed much better. Vasco have recorded the seventh most goals in the league with 21. Unfortunately, Palmeiras have tallied the fourth most goals with 25. Palmeiras have impressively conceded a mere 15 goals, which is the fifth fewest in the league. The recent addition of AC Milan defender Gustavo Gomez will only help to solidify the team’s defence.
Making Vasco’s attempt to beat Palmeiras for the first time since 2015 is the home side’s recent win record. Palmeiras have won 13 of their last 14 matches at the Allianz Parque. Palmeiras have won 17 of 24 points at home while scoring 16 and allowing just seven goals. Vasco have one just three points on the road this term. Vasco’s only points from away matches have come from three draws. Even worse for Vasco is their record against Palmeiras at the Allianz. Palmeiras have lost just once in 12 home matches against Vasco.
Palmeiras will once again get the best of Vasco da Gama. Felipao’s team have been too good against Vasco at home. A win for Palmeiras and they could enter the top four. Meanwhile, Vasco could find themselves in the bottom four by the weekend’s conclusion.
