Huge Premier League Relegation Battle

Huge Premier League Relegation Battle

The 2017/18 Premier League season is fast drawing to a close and there is a massive match on Tuesday night as Swansea City and Southampton clash at the Liberty Stadium.

Swansea City start the match in 18th place and that means they are in the final relegation position. The recent results of West Bromwich Albion mean it is still possible for Swansea City to finish in 19th place but also as high as 15th.

Southampton sit just one place above Swansea City in the Premier League and have the same number of points having played the same amount of matches.  Therefore, the winner of this match would take a huge stride towards Premier League survival.

Swansea City come into this match on the back of a 1-0 defeat at Bournemouth.  With the Cherries also in the bottom half of the table, Swansea City were hoping to take something from this game but came away with a disappointing defeat.

Trends show Swansea City have failed to win any of their last seven Premier League matches and having seen an upturn in form following the appointment of Carlos Carvalhal, the Welsh club have been sucked back into the relegation mix.

However, Swansea City have been tough to beat at home and have lost just one of their last six home league games, picking up wins against Liverpool, Arsenal, Burnley and West Ham United.  Trends show Swansea City have failed to score a goal in each of their last three Premier League matches.

Southampton travel to Wales on the back of a 1-1 draw at Everton. On the face of it, that’s a decent point for the Saints but as they were winning 1-0 in stoppage time, the late goal makes it feel like a defeat.  Mark Hughes must lift his players for this match.

The draw at Everton means Southampton have won only one of their last seven games in all competitions and that came at home to Bournemouth in the Premier League on the 28th April.  Recent away form makes for poor reading and Southampton have won one of their last sixteen away league games.

You must go back to the 3rd February to find the last time Southampton won an away Premier League game and that came at West Bromwich Albion, who seemed doomed at the time.

Southampton have kept a clean sheet in just one of their last eight away Premier League matches.

Looking ahead to the team news and Swansea City will be without the injured trio of Wilfried Bony, Leroy Fer and Kyle Bartley.  Kyle Naughton is a doubt due to illness and Carvalhal may make a couple of changes from the team which lost at Bournemouth.

Southampton are missing central defender Maya Yoshida, who was sent off against Everton.  Mario Lemina was taken off in that game and could be replaced with Nathan Redmond.  Steven Davis is injured and Sofiane Boufal is not being considered.

Both teams will know the significance of losing this match and that will be playing on the minds of the managers and players.  Expect to see a tight and tense game of football, with few goals and the most likely outcome is a draw, which will see the relegation battle taken to the final day of the season.
