Leeds United ready for breakout win
The last 11 weeks haven't been kind to Leeds United as the side has dropped out of the promotion playoff places. However, Leeds may still have a final postseason push left in them. If they do, it will start on Saturday against Sheffield Wednesday.
Twelve points separate Leeds and Sheffield Wednesday in the Championship table, currently. Neither side is in great form and both are coming off of draws in their last matches. Leeds will have their home support behind them at Elland Road. The Whites have secured 26 of 54 points from home this season. It isn't great, but it is slightly better than their road points total.
Although Leeds do still have a shot at making the promotion playoffs, the final games of the season will be used as auditions for many of the team's players. Reports indicate the club will be overhauling its squad in the offseason. Due to Leeds fast start nature that they couldn't sustain, the club's hierarchy wants to invest in some new player personnel.
Pierre-Michel Lasogga maybe one of the players the team retains, however. The German has led the way in scoring for Leeds, tallying 10 goals. Lasogga only played 13 minutes in Leeds most recent match, a draw against Reading. Lasogga has gone four games without scoring, which came on the back of a run of three goals in three games. Leeds' Kemar Roofe has scored nine times this season and has proven to be an astute player in front of goal. Unfortunately, Roofe has missed all of March with a muscle injury. The complexity of the injury means his return is up in the air. He could feature in some capacity on Saturday.
Sheffield Wednesday are winless in their last five matches in the Championship. The team's focus on the FA Cup can be credited with their poor run of recent results. Despite their focus being elsewhere, this Wednesday team isn't great. The appointment of manager Jos Luhukay hasn't stopped the team from losing points. However, his players have recently come to his aid, stating supporters shouldn't blame the gaffer. Problem is, Luhukay has won just once in 11 tries. It has been hard for supporters to stomach, especially after last season's fourth place finish and playoff promotion spot.
Sheffield Wednesday have scored the seventh fewest goals in the Championship (39) and the team manage just 12.5 shots per game. Under Luhukay, the Owls have scored just nine goals, and in four matches, the team has been held scoreless. If a Sheffield Wednesday goal does come against Leeds, it could be created from the left side of the attack. The Owls have scored 38% of their goals from that side and left sided midfielder Adam Reach has struck four times.
Leeds will pick up all three points in Saturday's fixture. The win could re-ignite hopes of a playoff place as only nine games remain in the season.
