Swansea showing signs of being the next Sunderland
For years, Sunderland produced great escape acts from the Premier League relegation zone. They hired and fired manager after manager until their luck ran out last season when the Black Cats finally suffered relegation under David Moyes.
Unfortunately, Swansea seems to be going down the same road in the Premier League. On Saturday afternoon, the Swans suffered a 1-0 home defeat by Brighton Hove Albion.
The Welsh side are in the Premier League’s relegation zone, having picked up just eight points from their 11 league games this season. Like Sunderland, the Swans have gone through many managers in recent seasons.
The latest incumbent Paul Clement has come in for severe criticism this season. However, last season he was hailed as the clubs saviour and highly praised. Football fans are a fickle bunch.
The main problem at the Welsh club is that they have diluted the quality of their squad in the last two summer transfer windows. The summer before last Ashley Williams and Andre Ayew left the club, both were key players at the time.
Then the Swans sold their two best performers from last season attacking midfielder Gylfi Sigurdsson and top scorer Fernando Llorente this summer. The pair have struggled at Everton and Tottenham respectively.
At Swansea though, they were crucial players that when used together made a deadly duo. The Swans fans were hopeful that quality replacements would arrive with the funds received.
Instead, the replacements such as Wilfried Bony, Sam Clucas, Roque Mesa and Renato Sanches have struggled to make an impact. The only successful summer signing has been Chelsea loan star, Tammy Abraham.
The problem the young striker has had is the chronic lack of creativity and supply from his teammates. Against Brighton, the Swans once again struggled to create much going forward.
If the Welsh club is not careful, they could suffer the same fate as Sunderland, which would be unfortunate.
