Champions League Heroes Meet at Wembley

Champions League Heroes Meet at Wembley

What a week it was for Premier League teams in the UEFA Champions League, as they continue to set the standard this season.

Two of the top performers meet on Sunday afternoon in the Premier League as Tottenham Hotspur welcome Liverpool to Wembley.

Tottenham did not win their match in mid-week but played very well and picked up an excellent point at the home of the current Champions League holders, Real Madrid.  Liverpool had a match they were expected to win in Maribor but they not only claimed maximum points, they took apart their opponents to claim a massive 7-0 victory.

Following their result in Madrid, trends show Tottenham are now ten matches without tasting defeat and are generally in good form.

However, it’s their form at Wembley which remains a concern this season and although they defeated Bournemouth 1-0 last weekend, it was not convincing.  The win over Bournemouth is their only home win in the Premier League this season.

Mauricio Pochettino’s team have picked up 5 points from a possible 12 at home, with draws against Swansea and Burnley, plus a 2-1 defeat to Chelsea.

However, even by considering this seasons fixtures at Wembley, Tottenham have lost only one of their last twenty-three home league games.  They have also kept a clean sheet in four of their last six games in all competitions.

Liverpool have been creating plenty of chances this season but their finishing and defending has been letting them down. That was not the case in the Champions League on Tuesday night and Jurgen Klopp will be hoping to transfer that to the Premier League on Sunday.

Trends show the 7-0 win over Maribor was Liverpool’s first in four matches and only their second in their last nine games in all competitions.

During those nine games, there have been defeats to Manchester City in the Premier League and Leicester City in the League Cup.  Liverpool have also been held by Sevilla, Burnley and Manchester United at home plus Spartak Moscow and Newcastle United away from home.

Despite what appears to be doom and gloom surrounding Liverpool’s start to the season, they have lost only one game, which was against table toppers Manchester City, with ten men for much of the match.

Away from home, Liverpool have won three of their eight games in all competitions and have kept only one clean sheet, which came at Maribor on Tuesday.

Team news and Mousa Dembele, Victor Wanyama and Erik Lamela are all out for Tottenham.  Ben Davies is doubtful but should be fit enough to take his place on the left side of the team.

Liverpool are still without Sadio Mane, Adam Lallana, Nathaniel Clyne, and Adam Bogdan who are injured.  Simon Mignolet, Jordan Henderson and Joe Gomez missed the game in mid-week but are expected to come back into the team.

There haven’t been many goals in the Premier League at Wembley this season and Tottenham will be wary of Liverpool’s attacking threat in this game.  It would not be a surprise to see under 2.5 goals scored but Liverpool have a decent record against the top teams and could leave Wembley with a point.
