Cork City set to clinch Irish title against rivals

Cork City host reigning champions Dundalk at Turners Cross on Monday night, in a game that could see the home side clinch the Irish Premier League title.

Cork head into this game 11 points clear of champions Dundalk in second place, with just five games to go. A home win would make it mathematically impossible for the visitors to catch City in the title race.

John Caulfield’s side had been dominant in the Irish top-flight, until recent weeks that is. Having steamrolled most of their opposition in the early part of the campaign, Cork have now lost four of their last six league games, including their last two against Shamrock Rovers and Limerick.

The home side have also lost their last two league games at Turners Cross. However, prior to those recent defeats they had recorded 18 straight home wins in the league. Everybody connected with the club will be hoping for a return to that sort of stellar home form.

Dundalk have dominated the Premier League in recent years. However, Cork’s strong start to the campaign has seen the reigning champions fall far behind the home side in the title race. Although it is still possible, it seems unlikely that Stephen Kenny’s side can still bridge the gap.

A win in this clash would at least give them hope of retaining their title. The visitors have been in top form of late in the Premier League, recording four straight league wins and scoring three or more goals in each of those victories.

Their recent away form in the Irish top-flight is also good, as they have won six of their last seven league games on their travels, while also scoring two or more goals in five of their last seven away games.

Forebet predicts that Cork will come out on top in this clash and end Dundalk’s run as reigning Irish champions.
