Manchester United to Stay Top

Manchester United to Stay Top

With both teams having played their first group games in Europe in mid-week, it’s back to the Premier League for Manchester United and Everton on Sunday.

Manchester United eased passed Basel on Tuesday night in the Champions League, recording a 3-0 win to move top of their Champions League group.  Things did not go so well for Everton however as they lost 3-0 at Atalanta in the Europa League.

Ronald Koeman was so disappointed with Everton’s display, he took to social media to make a statement about the team in a bid to raise their game ahead of the tough trip to Old Trafford.

Trends show Manchester United have made an unbeaten start to the 2017/18 season and have won four and drawn one of their five competitive matches.  The draw came at Stoke City in the Premier League last weekend in what was a difficult match for the Red Devils.

There have been convincing wins in the Premier League against West Ham United and Leicester City at home and Swansea City away from home.

It’s Manchester United’s home form which stands out and trends show they are undefeated in their last thirty-three home matches in all competitions and Jose Mourinho is slowly turning Old Trafford back into the fortress it was under Sir Alex Ferguson.

Manchester United have won by 2 or more goals in six of their last seven competitive games and have kept a clean sheet in seven of their last eight, making them a team in good form ahead of this match.

The same cannot be said for Everton, who have had a difficult start to the season.

Trends show Everton have failed to win any of their previous five matches in all competition, drawing two and losing three.  They have lost each of their last three matches, including a 3-0 home Premier League defeat to Tottenham Hotspur last weekend.  That defeat is sandwiched between the 2-0 Premier League loss at Chelsea and 3-0 defeat in the Europa League at Atalanta.

Away from home in the Premier League, trends show Everton have failed to win any of their last ten games and have kept only two clean sheets. Unless their performance level improves dramatically in comparison to their previous two matches, the Toffees could be in for a long afternoon at Old Trafford on Sunday.

One crumb of comfort for Everton is the absence of Manchester United midfielder Paul Pogba.  The Frenchman will miss this match with a hamstring injury and could be replaced by Ander Herrera or Marouane Fellaini.  Romelu Lukaku is set to start up-front against his old club.

Everton are still without Seamus Coleman, Yannick Bolasie, Ross Barkley and Ramiro Funes Mori due to injury.  Wayne Rooney and Morgan Schneiderlin will hope to start against their former club.

It’s difficult to see anything other than a home win in this game.  Manchester United slipped up at Stoke last weekend and Mourinho will be keen to get back to winning ways immediately in the Premier League.

Everton have struggled in their last three matches and must deal with playing on Thursday’s and Sunday’s, something which has proven problematical for teams in recent years.  Expect Manchester United to win by 2 goals or more.
