Argentina to record vital win over River Plate rivals
On Friday, neighbours Uruguay host neighbours Argentina in the South American section of World Cup qualifying.
The home side are currently third in the standings. However, their position in the four automatic qualification spots no longer looks secure after three consecutive defeats against Chile, Brazil and last time out Peru.
When the two teams met in the reverse fixture, Argentina recorded a 1-0 win over Oscar Tabarez’s side. La Celeste do not have a good record against the visitors either, as they have lost five of the last seven games against their neighbours, including the last two meetings.
Uruguay do however have a very strong home record in World Cup qualifying. A 4-1 defeat in their last home qualifier ended a run of eight straight wins for La Celeste on home soil. They have also managed to score two or more goals in seven of those eight victories.
Argentina are currently fifth in standings, a point behind fourth place Chile and their Friday opponents. In truth, Jorge Sampaoli’s team have endured a difficult qualifying campaign so far. However, the return from suspension of Barcelona’s Lionel Messi will give the visitors some hope of redeeming their situation.
A win in Montevideo would move the visitors into the qualification spots. Anything other than maximum points would leave Messi and co. possibly facing the prospect of a play-off or even elimination.
Argentina have enjoyed mixed results of late in qualifying, as they followed-up wins over Colombia and Chile with a 2-0 defeat last time out in the high altitude of Bolivia.
Strangely, the Albiceleste have struggled for goals of late in qualifying, scoring just four goals in their last five qualifiers. Forebet predicts that Argentina will bounce back from defeat against Bolivia and record a vital victory over their River Plate rivals.
