Pointless Palace Need Result Against the Swans

Crystal Palace and Swansea City endured difficult campaigns in the 2016/17 season and relegation from the Premier League was a distinct possibility for both clubs.

In the end, they finished level on 41 points, 7 points clear of the relegation zone but this did not tell the full story.  Crystal Palace produced a run of six wins and one draw from eight games between 25th February and 23rd April.  This was enough to keep them in the top flight.

Swansea saved their best form for the very end of the season, winning four and drawing one of their final five matches to secure another season of Premier League football.

Neither club will want a similar season to the one before but things do not look promising at the start of the 2017/18 campaign.

Trends show Crystal Palace are yet to pick up a point having lost to Huddersfield Town at home and Liverpool away. The defeat to Liverpool was acceptable but the 3-0 loss to Huddersfield at Selhurst Park was a dreadful result.

Frank de Boer is already under pressure after just two league games of the new season and a defeat in this one will leave him in a difficult position.

Including results from last season, trends show Crystal Palace have won just one of their last seven matches in the Premier League and have failed to score a single goal in each of the last three.

Swansea City started the season with a good point in a 0-0 draw at Southampton.  The home side were the better team and Swansea struggled to creates any clear chances in the game but were happy with the point and clean sheet.

However, their second match ended in a 4-0 home defeat at the hands of Manchester United and while the Red Devils played well at times, Swansea were lacking and again struggled to create good openings in attack.

Swansea have won only one of their last nine away Premier League games and trends show they have failed to score a goal in four of their last six on the road.

Looking ahead to the potential team news and Crystal Palace are without Bakary Sako, Wilfried Zaha, Pape Souare and Connor Wickham who are injured.  Jairo Riedewald is rated as doubtful but de Boer will be hoping his new singing is available for selection.

Swansea will travel to London without the injured trio of Ki Sung-yueng, Nathan Dyer and Kyle Bartley.  Fernando Llorente and Leon Britton are hoping to play some part in the match and new signing Sam Clucas could make his debut.

Neither team have been good going forward this season which suggests we could be in for a low scoring game at Selhurst Park.  In fact, they have managed just five shots on target between them in four matches, which is very poor.

Do not be surprised to see under 2.5 goals in this game and a low scoring draw.
