Sunderland have endured a truly torrid Premier League campaign. The Black Cats played their last home game of the season on Saturday and suffered a 2-0 defeat against another struggling side in Swansea City.
The defeat means that Sunderland have not won in their last ten home games in the Premier League. The club's current home run is the worst in the club's Premier League history and the run summed up Sunderland’s efforts this season.
The performance against Swansea was not good enough and this summer boss David Moyes has some big decisions to make. The Championship is a very difficult league to earn promotion from and the experienced Scot will need to rebuild his squad this summer.
The north east side look likely to have to face next season without star striker Jermain Defoe. The veteran striker has scored 15 Premier League this season, despite his team’s poor performances this season.
The striker has a release clause that allows him to leave on a free transfer if the club are relegated. That means the diminutive star is likely to leave this summer, with a number of Premier League clubs believed to be interested in signing the striker, including former clubs West Ham and Bournemouth.
Young goalkeeper Jordan Pickford has also produced some very good performances for the Black Cats this season. The 23-year-old is regarded as one of the best young English goalkeepers and it seems unlikely that he will remain with the club in the second tier.
David Moyes future seemed uncertain after the Black Cats struggles this season. However, the Scot has said he will not quit. If he is not fired then he has a major job on his hands to get the Black Cats back into the Premier League next season. |
