Feyenoord to clinch Eredivisie title with win over Excelsior

The Feyenoord squad were given a heroes’ welcome upon returning to Rotterdam following their 2-0 victory over Vitesse Arnhem. The team bus was met by a crowd of supporters, armed with colourful flares, as they seemingly got their title-winning celebrations off to an early start.

Going by the scenes, you would think that the club had already won their first title since the 1998/99 season. That isn’t yet the case. However, last weekend’s victory, coupled with second-placed Ajax’s devastating loss to current champions PSV Eindhoven, means that Feyenoord are now four points clear at the top of the table.

Just one more victory, in what has been an outstanding season, would put Feyenoord out of reach and deliver the fans some much-awaited success. They can do just that this Sunday against local rivals SBV Excelsior. The mid-table club have suffered two heavy defeats at the hands of Feyenoord already this season, conceding four goals on both occasions, and are likely to face a similar fate once again.

While Feyenoord now have some breathing space due to last weekend’s results, they will want to finish off the title race as soon as possible. Despite their blip, Ajax have two fairly easy games left to play against relegated side Go Ahead Eagles and mid-table Willem II. There is no room for slip-ups and Feyenoord manager Giovanni van Bronckhorst will have undoubtedly drilled that into his players throughout the week.

Regardless, the chances of Feyenoord falling short at this point are slim. The high-flying club have claimed an average of 2.5 points per game throughout the season and have lost just three times in the Eredivisie.

That isn’t to say that the game will be an easy one for the club. Despite a poor season, Excelsior are currently enjoying a run of three straight wins that has lifted them out of the relegation zone. They appear to have secured their survival, but they will be keen to pick up another result over the final two games to confirm their safety.

Although, with the incredible Nicolai Jorgensen leading the line, you would expect Feyenoord to come away with the three points. The talented Dane is top scorer in the Eredivisie, having netted 21 times in 30 appearances. He scored both goals against Vitesse last weekend and will undoubtedly want to get on the scoresheet this weekend to clinch the title and cement his star status at the club.

Even if Feyenoord fail to get the job done, they will still have one final home game to secure the points that they need. Given that they remain undefeated at home and have dropped just four points at the De Kuip throughout the campaign, a victory, and with it the title, is almost guaranteed.
