After putting together a run of two draws and two wins between March 4th and April 2nd, it seemed that Wolfsburg had done just enough in the second half of the season to keep themselves away from the relegation zone and secure their place in the top flight for the 2017/18 campaign.

However, their form has since taken another hit. They have won just one game throughout April, suffering three defeats in their last four matches, and they now find themselves hovering dangerously close to the foot of the table once again. Just one point separates them from 16th, which would require them to win a relegation play-off to remain in the top flight, while they are just five points above 17th place, which would result in automatic relegation.

While dropping five points seems unlikely, with just four games left to be played this season, the club’s incredibly tough run-in means that anything is still possible. Having suffered a narrow 1-0 defeat to fifth-placed Hertha Berlin last weekend, Wolfsburg must now host league leaders Bayern Munich as they attempt to maintain the gap between them and the bottom.

Bayern Munich will travel to the Volkswagen Arena on Saturday, 29th April, with kick-off set for 5:30pm BST.

Having opened up a comfortable eight point lead over second-placed RB Leipzig, Carlo Ancelotti’s side will be confident that the title race is all but over. Yet, having recorded back-to-back draws against mid-table sides Bayer Leverkusen and Mainz 05 in recent weeks, the club will be looking to get back to winning ways and ensure that their lead isn’t diminished further. They haven’t won on the road in over a month, but they will be confident that they can take all three points from Wolfsburg once again this season.

Bayern showed their superiority over Andries Jonker’s side back in December, as they stormed to a dominant 5-0 victory, but they would be silly to view this game as an easy ride.

Despite their large periods of bad form, Wolfsburg have shown glimpses of their class at times this season. They sprung a surprise on RB Leipzig last month, claiming a shock 1-0 victory at the Red Bull Arena, and certainly have the quality to beat any Bundesliga side on their day. With veteran star Mario Gomez in a decent spell of form, having scored eight goals in his last eight Bundesliga appearances, he could do some damage if they catch Bayern Munich on a rare bad day.

Yet, despite the talent at their disposal, it’s hard to see Wolfsburg regaining their form against the best team in Germany. Despite pressure from RB Leipzig, Bayern have responded well this season and look set to clinch a fifth consecutive title, with another likely three points on Saturday taking them one step closer.
