Roma to secure Europa League spot with victory over relegation-threatened Spezia

Roma welcome Spezia to the Stadio Olimpico in the final round of Serie A fixtures on Sunday, with both sides needing points for different reasons.

Jose Mourinho’s side find themselves sixth – one point above seventh-placed Juventus – meaning they can secure Europa League football this weekend.

At the opposite end of the table, Spezia and Hellas Verona are locked on 31 points, with both teams in danger of relegation on the final day.

Roma head into Sunday’s showdown on the back of a penalty-shootout defeat to Sevilla in the Europa League final, which saw Mourinho lose his first European final.

Paulo Dybala put Roma ahead midway through the first half before Gianluca Mancini scored an own goal, with Sevilla winning 4-1 on penalties.

Roma have now failed to win any of their last five matches in all competitions, recording three successive draws before suffering back-to-back defeats.

Although Mourinho's men have won just one of their previous 10 outings – recording five draws and four losses in that time – they will be confident of dispatching lowly Spezia.

Needless to say, Spezia have endured a difficult campaign, recording six wins, 13 draws and 18 losses in the league.

Only the bottom two sides – Sampdoria and Cremonese – have conceded more goals than Spezia, while only Sampdoria have scored fewer goals.

Spezia head into the final day of the season on the back of a 4-0 defeat to Torino, meaning they have lost four of their last six matches.

With a solitary victory coming in their previous 11 Serie A encounters, the relegation strugglers will find it difficult to notch a positive result on Sunday.

Head-to-head: Since Spezia gained promotion to Serie A in 2021, they have failed to beat Roma in five attempts, suffering four defeats in that time.

To make matters worse for Spezia, Roma have won each of the previous three encounters without conceding a goal.

Team news: Roma will finish the season with Marash Kumbulla as the Albania international continues to recover from an ACL injury.

As for Spezia, Joao Moutinho (ankle) and Emil Holm (groin) will miss Sunday’s showdown, while Petar Zovko (muscle) is a doubt.

Given that 29-point gulf between these two sides, Roma are expected to flex their muscles and cruise to victory on the final weekend of the season.

Forebet predicts that Roma will score over 1.5 goals and keep a clean sheet on Sunday, securing Europa League football while leaving Spezia in relegation trouble.
