Twente and Ajax Likely to Draw Once More in the KNVB Cup Ro16

It's the tie of the round on the KNVB Cup this Thursday evening as two of the top five in the Eredivisie meet one another at the De Grolsch Veste as Twente take on Ajax with the two adrift of the top two spots in the Dutch top flight ahead of this one.

It’s rare we ever see Ajax in third at this stage in the season but it does seem as if they are missing the likes of Lisandro Martinez, Antony and Erik ten Hag this campaign with them behind Feyenoord and AZ Alkmaar. In fact, with PSV Eindhoven also behind Ajax in the table, it is turning out to be a monumental season in the Eredivisie.

Ajax have so far managed to win only 11 of their 20 games so far, just one fewer than PSV, Alkmaar and Feyenoord.

The champions have also drawn seven times, which does mean just two defeats as well. At the same time, the third-placed side remain the top scorers in the league with 56 going in and 21 goals conceded as well.

Ahead of the game, however, Ajax are in excellent form and they haven't lost since before the international break for the World Cup where they were defeated on home soil by PSV.

Last time out, Ajax hammered Cambuur away from home with a goal from Dusan Tadic and a brace each from Steven Berghuis and Brian Brobbey.

The Dutch giants also defeated Excelsior 4-1 a week prior, as Tadic netted another goal from the penalty spot. Davy Klaassen, Mohamed Kudus and Devyne Rensch all scored another goal each that day.

Also in 2023, the club drew 1-1 with Volendam where Kudus scored again, as they also drew with the league leaders Feyenoord and even managed to rack a draw with Twente in Amsterdam.

That game finished 0-0 with seven shots on target for Twente and five for Ajax. Rensch was also sent off in the last game between these two, but he is fine to play here.

As for Twente, they've moved down into fifth after three draws in a row with Vitesse, Feyenoord and Groningen.

Twente have won just 10 games this season, but in letting in only 13 goals this campaign, the club are the best defensive team in the Netherlands this season.
