Newcastle United carry a 1-0 advantage into the second leg of their EFL Cup semi-final against Southampton, with the two sides meeting at St. James’ Park on Tuesday night.

Both teams created numerous chances in the first leg at St. Mary’s, with Southampton registering 13 shots and Newcastle recording 15.

However, Joelinton scored the only goal of the game on 73 minutes – giving his side a narrow lead heading into the second leg.

Newcastle kicked off their EFL Cup campaign with a 2-1 victory over Tranmere Rovers before beating Crystal Palace on penalties in the third round.

After defeating Bournemouth 1-0 in the fourth round, the Magpies claimed a 2-0 victory over Leicester City to book their place in the semi-finals.

In the Premier League, Eddie Howe’s side have suffered a solitary defeat in 20 matches this season – meaning they sit third in table.

Newcastle also boast the best defensive record in the Premier League, so they will be confident of keeping another clean sheet against low-scoring Southampton.

As for the Saints, they find themselves rock bottom of the Premier League table – two points from safety and 24 points shy of Newcastle.

Southampton have lost 13 of their 20 league matches this term, picking up just four wins and three draws along the way.

In the EFL Cup, the south coast side defeated Cambridge United, Sheffield Wednesday and Lincoln City in the early rounds before beating Manchester City 2-0 in the quarter-finals.

However, they could struggle to emulate those heroics against Newcastle, who have been one of the strongest sides in the country this season.

Head-to-head: Southampton have only managed to win one of their previous 12 meetings with Newcastle in all competitions, suffering eight defeats in the process.

The Magpies have won four of their last five matches against the Saints, scoring over 1.5 goals on four occasions during that period.

Team news: Newcastle are still without the injured Matt Targett, while Jonjo Shelvey is on the verge of joining Nottingham Forest.

Stuart Armstrong, Alex McCarthy and Tino Livramento are all out injured for Southampton, while Moussa Djenepo and Theo Walcott are doubts.

Having secured a first-leg advantage on the south coast last week, Newcastle look set to seal the deal on home soil.

Forebet predicts that Newcastle will keep yet another clean sheet on their way to beating Southampton, booking their place in the EFL Cup final in the process.
