A French Cup Classic Expected Between Marseille and Rennes

Action in France will take a break from Ligue 1 to make way for the French Cup round of 32 this weekend with Marseille and Rennes set to kick off the cup games on Friday night with an all-Ligue 1 clash at the Orange Vélodrome.

What makes this match all the more interesting is how the two are separated by just two places in Ligue 1. As of now, it is Marseille who sit up in third after a sensational run of form post-World Cup, with the club having a five-point gap now in the fifth-placed side.

Rennes in fifth are, however, coming into this game off the back of their best result of the season. The club became the first and only team so far to beat Paris Saint-Germain in all competitions, with the Parisians previously going unbeaten across Europe, the French Cup and Ligue 1.

Rennes managed to get past PSG at home thanks to a goal from Hamari Traore in the second half.

Rennes had previously lost to Clermont Foot and beaten Nice in Ligue 1 in January, while also losing 3-1 to Reims at the end of December.

It means two losses and two wins for them in Ligue 1 since the World Cup, but they are still in a European spot with a chance in the Champions League still well on the cards.

Rennes defeated Ligue 2's Bordeaux last time out in the French Cup round of 64, as Benjamin Bourigeaud scored the opening goal before a winner from Jeremy Doku.

As for Marseille, their winning form continued last weekend with a fantastic 3-1 victory over Lorient. Sead Kolasinac got a rare goal that day, as fellow former Arsenal man, Alexis Sanchez, also scored. Jordan Veretout made it three after going 1-0 down inside 30 minutes at home.

Marseille's run since the World Cup in Ligue 1 has also seen them beat Troyes away from home and Montpellier on the road too. They kicked off their Ligue 1 return with a sensational 6-1 victory over Toulouse at the end of December.

The Ligue 1 giants also eased past Hyeres in the French Cup's last round, as Sanchez scored once more before a goal from Bamba Dieng. Eric Bailly was also sent off that day.

Forebet predicts a high-scoring game in this one here with Forebet predicting the game to see over 2.5 goals and a draw at the Orange Vélodrome.
