USA expected to frustrate England in Group B

England head into the second round of World Cup fixtures atop Group B after thrashing Iran 6-2 last time out. On Friday, the Three Lions face the United States at Al-Bayt Stadium.
Meanwhile, the USA were held to a 1-1 draw by Wales on Monday. As a result, they find themselves third in Group B – two points behind England.
Gareth Southgate’s side are expected to make it two wins from two on Friday, but the Stars and Stripes will fancy their chances of causing upset. Let’s take a closer look at both sides.
England kicked off their World Cup campaign with a dominant 6-2 victory over Iran. Bukayo Saka bagged a brace, while Jude Bellingham, Raheem Sterling, Marcus Rashford and Jack Grealish also scored.
Southgate’s side registered 79% possession and 13 shots, seven of which were on target. Meanwhile, they limited Iran to just three attempts on target.
England suffered Nations League relegation earlier this year, recording three draws and three losses on their way to finishing below Germany, Spain and Hungary.
When you look at the bigger picture, however, the Three Lions have suffered just three defeats in their previous 16 games across all competitions.
As for the USA, they appeared to be heading for victory over Wales in their opening game after a Timothy Weah goal capped off a dominant first half.
However, the Stars and Stripes failed to rediscover their momentum after half-time and ended up conceding a late penalty to draw 1-1.
It is worth noting Gregg Berhalter’s men have lost just one of their past seven games in all competitions, sealing two wins and four draws along the way.
But following a 2-0 loss to Japan and a goalless draw with Saudi Arabia in the lead-up to the World Cup, the States could struggle to claim all three points on Friday.
Head-to-head: The USA have only managed to beat England on two occasions over the years (1950 and 1993). The Three Lions have won eight of the 11 meetings.
When the teams last met in a friendly back in 2018, England claimed an easy 3-0 victory – thanks to goals from Jesse Lingard, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Callum Wilson.
Team news: Kyle Walker and James Maddison could feature on Friday after missing England’s opener due to injury. Harry Kane has been passed fit after picking up a knock last time out.
On the flip side, Brenden Aaronson and Jordan Morris will be hoping to break into the USA’s starting XI after coming off the bench in the first game.
England cruised past Iran without any real problems. However, the USA are expected to put up a far greater fight than Iran.
