An Opening Weekend Berlin Derby Likely Sees Union Defeat Hertha

The first weekend of the Bundesiga season in 2022/23 sees a Berlin derby kick things off with a memorable game as Union Berlin meet with Hertha Berlin at the Stadion An der Alten Försterei following on from contrasting games in the DFB-Pokal.
Union managed to get out of the first round of the DFB-Pokal, where Chemnitzer fell to a 2-1 defeat. Union also met with SK Dynamo and Nottingham Forest to conclude things, and they defeated both via a 1-0 scoreline. Udinese also drew with the club 3-3 in what was a thrilling preseason friendly.
Now, after registering their greatest ever season in Bundesliga football, Union are fit and raring to go in this one.
After three years in the top flight of German football, the club managed to finish fifth in the league with 57 points from 34 games.
This saw them win 16 times and lose nine and draw nine too. What's more, they also managed to score 50 goals in the league that year and let in only 44 - stunningly, only three other sides had a better defensive record while this was also fewer goals than third-placed Bayer Leverkusen.
With Union now in the Europa League and flying high in Germany last time out, in the end, they finished 24 points above their rivals in what was such a dreadful year for Hertha.
In fact, they were saved by the skin of their teeth in the end as the club ended up in the relegation playoff battle against Hamburger SV.
Incredibly, Hertha lost the first game of the two-legged affair on home soil but managed to win 2-0 in the second leg to ultimately remain in the Bundesliga.
