Following defeat to Argentina in the Finalissima, Italy will be looking to bounce back when they host Germany in the UEFA Nations League on Saturday.
The reigning European champions suffered a 3-0 loss to Argentina at Wembley on Wednesday, as the Copa America winners claimed the flag for South America.
As for the Germans, this is their first game since March. They drew 1-1 with the Netherlands on that occasion, so they will be eager to return to winning ways.
After Wednesday’s defeat to Argentina, the Italians have now lost two of their previous three encounters across all competitions.
The first defeat in that sequence came against North Macedonia in the 2022 FIFA World Cup qualification play-offs, meaning they failed to punch their ticket to Qatar.
Let’s not forget that Robert Mancini’s men went all the way at Euro 2020. Since then, however, they have endured a mixed bag of results.
Since last summer’s European Championship, the Italians have registered three wins, four draws and three losses.
On the flip side, Germany head into Saturday’s clash on a nine-match unbeaten streak – including eight wins and one draw.
The Germans secured eight straight victories after Euro 2020 before drawing with the Netherlands last time out. Can they return to winning ways this weekend?
Germany endured a disappointing Euro 2020 campaign, finishing second in Group F before falling to arch-rivals England in the round of 16.
It is worth noting that Germany have scored 34 goals across their past nine games (3.8 goals per game) while keeping six clean sheets.
Head-to-head: Germany are currently enjoying a four-game unbeaten run against Italy in all competitions.
11 of the previous 15 meetings between Germany and Italy have produced under 2.5 goals, meaning we should see a low-scoring encounter on Saturday.
Team news: Italy legend Giorgio Chiellini retired from international football after the Finalissima. Mancini is expected to ring the changes following Wednesday’s heavy loss.
German duo Manuel Neuer (109 caps) and Thomas Muller (112 caps) are likely to add to their mammoth hauls this weekend.
Having lost 3-0 to Argentina in midweek, the Italians will be desperate to avoid defeat on Saturday. This should result in a tense and cagey clash.
For that reason, Forebet predicts that Italy and Germany will dish up a low-scoring draw – with both teams scoring under 1.5 goals.
