The Czech Republic were promoted from League B at the last edition of the UEFA Nations League. Now, Jaroslav Šilhavý has aims on staying in the top league of the competition.

Up first for the Czech Republic are Switzerland. The Swiss reached the semifinals of the inaugural UEFA Nations League in 2019. However, the Swiss failed to replicate their 2019 form at the second edition of the tournament.

Switzerland are ranked No. 14 in the world ahead of the summer tournament. A mixed bag of results have occurred this year with a 2-1 loss to England and a 1-1 draw with Kosovo in international friendlies.

The Swiss had a strong end to 2021 going 10-games unbeaten. They even reached the quarterfinals of the European Championship before being beaten on penalties by Spain.

The Czech Republic are ranked No. 33 in the world. While Switzerland will play at the World Cup later this year, the Czech Republic just missed out thanks to an extra-time loss to Sweden in the playoffs.

Group 2 isn’t an easy group as the Czechs and Swiss are joined by Spain and Portugal. The Spanish are favoured to get through the group after they finished as runners-up at the 2020-21 edition of the Nations League.

Like Switzerland, the Czech Republic go into the game this week winless in their last two games. An extra-time 1-0 loss to Sweden was followed by a 1-1 draw with Wales. The Czechs also reached the quarterfinals of last summer’s Euros before they were knocked out by Denmark.

The Czech Republic’s top striker, Patrik Schick, will miss the tournament in June due to injury. Schick just signed a new contract at Bayer Leverkusen and was one of the reasons the team reached the quarterfinals at the Euros.

Antonin Barak, Lukas Masopust, and Tomas Holes are also set to miss out with injuries. Tomas Soucek of West Ham will take his place in midfield as captain. Meanwhile, Tomas Vaclik should start in goal.

For Switzerland, Yann Sommer is the obvious choice in goal. Ricardo Rodriguez should play at left-back, while Granit Xhaka and Xherdan Shaqiri could take up places in midfield. Shaqiri’s selection may surprise a few as the 30-year-old plays in Major League Soccer after leaving Lyon in the winter.

The Czech Republic should be up for the game against Switzerland. With their home crowd behind them, the Czechs should pick up a narrow 1-0 win over the Swiss on matchday 1 of the Nations League.
