Rennes and Marseille to both score in top five clash

It’s the penultimate round of matches in the French top flight this weekend and with just two games remaining of the Ligue 1 season, the issues of European spots and potential relegation are almost at boiling point.

There are various permutations as to who’ll finish where, particularly in the top five of the division, and none more so than this upcoming clash between 5th placed Rennes and 2nd placed Marseille, never of whom are guaranteed to finish in their current positions.

Rennes need all three points to make absolutely sure of a place in the Conference League qualifiers.

But if they win and Monaco suffer a loss, an even bigger prize of a Champions League qualifier spot may open up to Saturday’s hosts.

Rennes have produced a mixed bag of results though in recent weeks as the hosts have won just two of their last five games at home.

Conversely, the hosts have lost just three in their previous 12 games on home soil at their Roazhon Park ground.

Terrier (21 goals) and Laborde (15 goals) look the most likely for Rennes.

Marseille sit in 2nd spot but even they’re not guaranteed the second automatic Champions League spot as Monaco are hot on their heels and just three points behind with goal difference level between the two teams heading into this weekend’s action.

Marseille are also in reasonable form as the visitors have won seven out of their last nine games overall in the French top flight and suffering just two defeats within this period.

So they will also fancy their chances of gaining a result here on Saturday evening.

The visitors have suffered just one defeat in the last seven away outings and that came in the form of a 2-1 defeat at the runaway Ligue 1 champions, PSG, but wins at Metz, Brest, St Etienne, Reims and Lorient have helped maintain Marseille’s push for Champions League football next season.

It’s also worth pointing out that six out of Marseille’s last eight away games have also resulted in both teams scoring and given the tight nature of this upcoming fixture, the goals market may be the best option for the casual punter here.

With both teams keen to secure European spots, there’s a strong likelihood of goals for both teams here.
