Union Magdalena and Alianza Petrolera set for stalemate in Colombia Primera A

Union Magalena host Alianza Petrolera on Thursday in the Colombia Primera A Apertura. The season is just underway in Colombia as Union Magdalena and Alianza Petrolera will play for just the second time in the Apertura.
Alianza Petrolera had a successful 2021 Clausura. The team went deep into the Clausura playoffs after finishing sixth in the division’s regular season.
Union Magdalena were promoted to the Colombia Primera A after achieving promotion last season. The Banana Cyclone will fancy their chances of staying in the Colombia top flight in the Apertura.
Alianza Petrolera picked up a win to kick off the Apertura. Petrolera won 2-1 against Deportivo Pereira on matchday 1. Deportivo Pereira scored in the third minute courtesy of a goal from Leonardo Castro.
Ruben Jimenez scored in the 21st minute to level the score for Alianza Petrolera. Kevin Londono scored in the final 20 minutes to give Alianza Petrolera the win.
Union Magdalena drew 1-1 with Caldas. Caldas scored Marcelino Carreazo, but Union Magdalena’s James Sanchez scored just minutes later to give the newly-promoted club a share of the spoils.
A win for Alianza Petrolera would send them into first place ahead of current co-leaders Santa Fe and Millonarios. Both Santa Fe and Millonairios have already played twice.
Last season, Alianza Petrolera were led in goals by Bayron Garces with nine goals in 37 matches. John Freddy Perez and Sebastian Acosta both scored five goals for the team. Garces added five assists to the Alianza Petrolera cause in 2021.
Union Magdalena returned to the Primera A after a season in the second division. Manager Carlos Silva will hope Sanchez can get on the scoresheet once more. Sanchez joined the team in January from Alianza Petrolera.
In 15 matches for Alianza Petrolera, Sanchez scored zero goals. He has already scored more goals for Union Magdalena since arriving this month.
Alianza Petrolera manager Hubert Bodhert played a 4-2-3-1 formation versus Deportivo Pereira in their opening fixture. Bodhert should play the same formation versus Union Magdalena this week.
Union Magdalena manager Silva should deploy the team in a 3-4-3 formation. The manager used it against Union Caldas Playing at home, Silva could deploy the team to attack.
