Lyon to ease to victory over St Etienne

The French top flight resumes the Ligue 1 action on Friday night with Lyon taking on St Etienne at the Groupama Stadium with Lyon looking to register back-to-back wins following victory over Troyes last time out.
A 1-0 win on the road at Troyes extended Lyon’s unbeaten run in Ligue 1 to five games overall having drawn each of their preceding four games with stalemates against Bordeaux, Lille, Metz and PSG respectively, which has helped maintain Lyon’s mid-table position of 11th place.
However, another win for Lyon on Friday night at their Groupama Stadium would see the hosts move within just two points of the top five pack and Monaco prior to this weekend’s fixtures in the French top flight.
Lyon have been in solid and consistent form on home soil so far in this season’s Ligue 1 campaign as the hosts have suffered just the one defeat to date, while wins against Strasbourg, Troyes, Monaco and Lens should give them plenty of confidence in gaining a favourable result on Friday night.
Onto St Etienne and the visitors currently sit bottom of Ligue 1 and five points adrift of their nearest relegation rivals, second from bottom outfit, Bordeaux, as they prepare for this tough looking trip to face a solid Lyon side in their own backyard.
Although St Etienne had seemingly grabbed a lifeline by recording back-to-back wins against Clermont and Troyes back in November, the visitors have subsequently folded as they’ve lost each of their last six matches on the trot.
Defeats against PSG, Brest, Rennes, Reims, Nantes and Lens have done little to lift the impending gloom around the St Etienne camp and indeed, their increasingly worrying relegation situation.
Results and form away from home have also been cause for major concern for St Etienne manager, Pascal Dupraz, as his St Etienne side have managed to pick up just the one win out of their last 10 outings on their travels, which came in the shape of a 1-0 win at Troyes.
However, six defeats within this period along with keeping just two clean sheets on the road suggests that this upcoming trip to the Groupama Stadium on Friday night to take on Lyon could well end up in further disappointment for the visitors.
