Senegal claimed a late win on matchday 1 of Africa Cup of Nations Group B play courtesy of a Sadio Mane penalty in the seventh minute of second half stoppage-time.

Guinea also claimed a matchday 1 win by a scoreline of 1-0. The National Elephants scored in the first half thanks to Issiaga Sylla to win against Malawi. Now, Guinea are aiming to defeat the Africa Cup of Nations’ tournament favourite.

Senegal are undefeated in 12 straight games in all competitions. Ten of those fixtures ended as wins for the Lions of Teranga. Guinea have won back-to-back matches in all competitions. Both victories were done by wins to nil.

Guinea and Senegal have played a number of times over the history. The Africa teams have met 54 times previously. Senegal have posted a fantastic head-to-head record of 25W-13D-16L across their 54 all-time games.

Despite needing a second half stoppage-time penalty to defeat Zimbabwe, Senegal tallied 16 shots. Only three shots hit the target, however. Senegal kept 62% possession. Still, Senegal conceded 11 shots with two hitting the target.

Guinea posted 65% possession against Malawi. They outshot Malawi 13-10 on matchday 1 of Group B. Guinea tallied just four shots on target to Malawi’s six.

Senegal and Guinea likely experienced plenty of matchday 1 nerves. Those nerves could dissipate when the teams meet on matchday 2 of Group B.

Manager Aliou Cisse was without captain Kalidou Koulibaly for the Africa Cup of Nations opener due to a positive COVID-19 test. Kouibaly may not be available for matchday 2.

Cisse was also without goalkeeper Edouard Mendy due to a positive COVID-19 test. He too may not be available for the game versus Guinea. Sane will once again lead the Senegal line in attack. One player unavailable to Cisse is Ismaila Sarr who travelled to Spain to have his knee looked at by a specialist.

Ahead of the Africa Cup of Nations tournament, Guinea’s president, Colonel Mamady Doumbouya, warned the players “they must win the Africa Cup of Nations, or pay back the money used to help them prepare for the tournament.”

Guinea played well enough in the first game of the tournament, but now come up against the tournament’s favourite, Senegal. The Lions of Teranga should play better in the second game of the Africa Cup of Nations.

Senegal should claim a win against Guinea to improve their head-to-head record. The Lions of Teranga will claim a win with over 2.5 goals and a win to nil.
