Atalanta to seal progression to UCL last 16 with win over Villarreal

Atalanta welcome Villarreal to the Gewiss Stadium on Champions League matchday 6 in a winner-take-all affair Wednesday night.
Unai Emery’s Villarreal can win Group F with a victory against Atalanta and a Manchester United defeat to Young Boys.
Gian Piero Gasperini’s Atalanta are third in Group F ahead of matchday 6. A win against Villarreal would send them above Villarreal and into the round of 16 for the third straight campaign. Anything less than a win for Gasperini’s team and Atalanta will miss out on the last 16 of the competition.
Villarreal go into matchday 6 in awful form. Emery’s team is winless in four of their last five games with three matches ending in defeat. The Yellow Submarine were defeated 1-0 by Sevilla in La Liga at the weekend.
Atalanta, on the other hand, are in excellent form ahead of Champions League matchday 6. La Dea are 10 games without a defeat and after defeating Napoli 3-2 at the weekend, Atalanta are now just four points off of first place in Serie A.
The teams’ previous Champions League meeting finished 2-2. Atalanta’s Remo Freuler opened the scoring after six minutes, but Villarreal’s Manuel Trigueros equalised before halftime.
Villarreal’s Arnaut Danjuma scored on 73 minutes to put the Yellow Submarine ahead. With Villarreal heading for the win, Atalanta’s Robin Gosens scored with seven minutes to play. Villarreal’s Francis Coquelin was sent off following Gosens’ goal.
Gosens and Matteo Lovato are ruled out of the match of Atalanta. Gasperini doesn’t have any further injury issues ahead of the match. He will likely select Duvan Zapata to lead the line in this must-win match. Zapata has scored 11 goals in all competitions.
Emery has more personnel problems to worry about. Yeremi Pino is ruled out of the match due to a suspension. Arnaut Danjuma and Francis Coquelin are both nursing injuries. The duo is in line to play, however. Emery needs his best players available and to step up to end the team’s terrible run of form.
Atalanta are unbeaten in 10 straight games and continuing to fly high. Gasperini’s team should get the result they need and defeat Villarreal in a close, cagey game.
The teams combined for four goals and both sides found the back of the net in the reverse fixture. Once again, both teams should score with over 2.5 goals going into the back of the net. The big difference with matchday 1 and 6 is Atalanta will collect a win over an out of form Villarreal.
