Southampton and Burnley are desperate for points going into Saturday’s Premier League clash at St. Mary’s Stadium. The Saints are coming off of a first win of the season against Leeds United which ended a two-match losing streak.
Burnley are one of three Premier League teams not to win a match this season alongside Newcastle United and Norwich City. The Clarets are in the bottom three with just three points from 24 taken this season.
Sean Dyche’s team look its weakest in some time and relegation to the Championship could be on the cards. A win over Southampton would be a massive shot in the arm and could take the Clarets out of the relegation zone.
Southampton have taken seven points from 24 on offer in the Premier League.
Ralph Hasenhuttl’s team looks more likely of mounting a charge up the Premier League table currently, especially after claiming maximum points against Leeds United a week ago.
Hasenhuttl has three players on the injury and suspension list going into the game. James Ward-Prowse is suspended and won’t return until matchday 10. Jack Stephens is suffering from a knee injury and is ruled out of the fixture. Striker Che Adams has been passed fit after suffering a slight injury.
Dyche has four names on the Burnley injury list going into the match this weekend. Dale Stephens is ruled out of the match with an ankle injury.
There is good news surrounding the trio of Charlie Taylor, Matej Vydra, and Ben Mee. All three are nearing returns and could play on Saturday at St. Mary’s Stadium.
Southampton did a league double over Burnley last season. The Saints won at Turf Moor 1-0 before playing at home and claiming a 3-2 victory. Southampton were down 2-0 after 28 minutes but came back to level the score just before halftime.
Nathan Redmond scored the Saints’ winner in the second half to send them to victory. Stuart Armstrong and Danny Ings had scored previously for Southampton.
Southampton have the second-most draws this season in the league with four. Burnley have drawn three of their eight matches in the league.
The Clarets have scored the second-fewest goals this season with five. Southampton have scored the third-fewest with six.
Due to the low total of goals for both sides, it is likely Southampton and Burnley will play out a draw with under 2.5 goals scored. Three of the last seven games between the clubs ended in stalemates.
