Man Utd and Liverpool set for high-scoring thriller at Old Trafford

One of English football’s biggest rivalries will be renewed on Sunday when Liverpool visit Old Trafford to face Manchester United in the Premier League.

Both sides head into Sunday’s clash on the back of dramatic midweek Champions League triumphs, adding extra spice to the encounter.

Sixth-place Man Utd currently sit four points behind second-place Liverpool in the table, meaning a win for the hosts will take them to within a point of Jurgen Klopp’s side.

The Red Devils found themselves 2-0 down at half-time on Wednesday, only to score three second-half goals a complete miraculous turnaround against Atalanta.

Goals from Marcus Rashford and Harry Maguire set Man Utd on their way, before Cristiano Ronaldo (who else?) netted the winner on 81 minutes.

It is worth pointing out, however, that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side have only managed to win three of their previous eight games in all competitions.

Their inconsistency has seen them lose to Young Boys, West Ham, Aston Villa and, most recently, Leicester – suffering a 4-2 defeat to the Foxes last weekend.

Let’s not forget that Man Utd have also conceded at least one goal in each of their past 12 home games in all competitions.

On the flip side, Liverpool head into Sunday’s showdown on a 21-match unbeaten streak across all competitions.

The Reds have also lost just four of their last 31 away games in all competitions, meaning they are likely to give United a run for their money on Sunday.

Klopp’s men also secured a 3-2 victory in the Champions League in midweek, seeing of Atletico Madrid in the Spanish capital.

Back in the Premier League, Liverpool are the highest scorers in the division – having netted 22 goals in eight games (2.75 goals per game).

Head-to-head: Man Utd’s last league win over Liverpool came back in 2018. Since then, the Reds have gone six EPL games unbeaten against Solskjaer’s side.

The last two meetings between the teams have produced a combined total of 11 goals (5.5 goals per game, so we are set for a high-scoring encounter on Sunday.

Team news: Raphael Varane is Man Utd’s only injury absentee at the moment, although Fred and Anthony Martial are doubts for Sunday.

Liverpool have Thiago Alcantara and Harvey Elliot sidelined through injury, although Curtis Jones is available for selection again.

Continuing the theme of high-scoring encounters between these two sides, we are destined to see plenty of goals at Old Trafford.

With that in mind, Forebet predicts that Liverpool end up on the right side of a five-goal thriller on Sunday.
