Tottenham expected to taint Newcastle’s new dawn

Newcastle United welcome Tottenham Hotspur to Tyneside on Sunday, hoping to begin the new era at St. James’ Park on a positive note.

As things stand, the Magpies are winless and find themselves second from bottom in the Premier League table.

Tottenham, meanwhile, sit eighth in the standings – nine points clear of Newcastle and two points outside the top four.

Newcastle have yet to win a single game this season, recording three draws and four losses in their opening seven league outings.

They also boast the joint-worst defensive record in the division, having conceded 16 goals this term (2.3 goals per game).

When you look at the bigger picture, the Magpies have only managed to win one of their previous nine matches in all competitions.

Allan Saint-Maximin has been a bright spot in an otherwise gloomy campaign for Newcastle, notching two goals and three assists in eight appearances across all competitions.

On the flip side, Tottenham kicked off their Premier League campaign with three consecutive 1-0 victories.

However, they lost their next three league outings – conceding three goals against Crystal Palace, Chelsea and Arsenal while scoring just once.

Spurs returned to winnings ways before the international break, though, beating Aston Villa 2-1 on home soil.

Nuno Espirito Santos’ men have netted just six goals in seven league games this term, meaning only five teams have scored fewer goals.

Their poor offensive record is partially down to the struggles of Harry Kane, who has yet to open his Premier League account this season.

Head-to-head: Spurs have lost just one of their previous eight meetings with Newcastle across all competitions.

Remarkably, Tottenham have scored at least one goal on each of their last 16 visits to St. James’ Park – meaning a clean sheet is unlikely for the hosts on Sunday.

Team news: Paul Dummett is currently sidelined for Newcastle, while Joe Willock, Jamaal Lascelles, Martin Dubravka, Callum Wilson and Jonjo Shelvey are doubts.

Tottenham will be without injured pair Steven Bergwijn and Ryan Sessegnon this weekend, while Ben Davies is also expected to miss out.

Although Newcastle will be eager to kick-start their new era on a high, Tottenham should have enough firepower to get the better of the hosts.

Forbet predicts that both teams will score on Sunday. However, Spurs are likely to come away with all three points.
