Bolivia and Paraguay braced for cagey World Cup qualifier

Following a rare victory over Peru, Bolivia will aim to secure back-to-backs wins they welcome Paraguay to Estadio Hernando Siles on Thursday.

Bolivia find themselves second from bottom in the South American World Cup qualifying group – two points ahead of last-place Venezuela.

Paraguay, on the other hand, sit sixth in the standings – three points behind fifth-place Colombia and three points clear of Bolivia.

The Bolivians picked up just their second win in 11 World Cup qualifiers last weekend, claiming a 1-0 victory over Peru.

Despite having Henry Vaca sent off midway through the second half, they managed 57% possession and 21 shots against the Peruvians.

Still, it is worth pointing out that Bolivia have only managed to win two of their previous 20 matches across all competitions.

Let's not forget that Bolivia also have the worst defensive record in the CONMEBOL WCQ group, having conceded 25 goals (2.3 goals per game).

On the flip side, Paraguay’s defeat to Chile on Sunday means they have won just one of their past nine qualifiers.

In fact, they have only managed to win two of their 11 qualifiers this campaign, although they do have a league-high six draws to their name.

Having netted a measly nine goals throughout the campaign (0.8 goals per game), Paraguay are the second-lowest scorers in the South American division.

Interestingly, trends show that each of Paraguay’s last six away games have been level at half-time – pointing towards a tight encounter on Thursday.

It is also worth noting that Paraguay have failed to score in each of their previous three World Cup qualifiers away from home.

Head-to-head: Paraguay have lost just one of their past five meetings with Bolivia across all competitions.

The Paraguayans beat Bolivia 3-1 in this summer’s Copa America, picking up their third victory in five matches in this fixture.

Team news: Bolivia will be forced to make at least one change from the win over Peru, as Henry Vaca is suspended following his red card.

Paraguay also have a man suspended for Thursday’s clash after Omar Alderete received a red card in the loss to Chile.

Given that both Bolivia and Paraguay have struggled for goals throughout the qualifying campaign, they are likely to dish up a low-scoring encounter on Thursday.

In fact, Forebet predicts that Bolivia and Paraguay will play out a goalless draw in La Paz.
