No sooner have Manchester United and West Ham clash, the pair meet once more at Old Trafford on Wednesday night in the Carabao Cup third round.
The Red Devils defeated the Hammers 2-1 at the London Stadium on Sunday. The winning goal came in the 89th minute courtesy of former West Ham loanee Jesse Lingard.
The win was just the latest in a good run of results for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s team. The home team have now won three of their last four games in all competitions. The blip in that run was a 2-1 defeat at Young Boys in the Champions League when they were reduced to ten men.
United will be confident of progressing to the next round in this clash, especially as they have a decent recent record in the League Cup, having won four of their last five matches in the competition.
The Red Devils have made it to the semi-finals of the Carabao Cup in the last two seasons, only to suffer defeat at the hands of arch-rivals Manchester City on both occasions.
The weekend defeat against United in the league ended West Ham’s unbeaten start to the season, which consisted of five games in all competitions.
The fact that star striker Michail Antonio missed out through suspension certainly affected the Irons performance. The former Nottingham Forest star should be back in the squad for this clash.
While another good Premier League campaign is likely the top of West Ham’s priority list, the Irons would not mind a good cup run. This game will certainly threaten their presence in the League Cup this season.
West Ham could not have a more mixed recent record in the League Cup, as in their last eight outings in the competition they have won four and lost four games.
