Athletic Bilbao to ease past the Topsy-Turvy Rayo Vallecano

Athletic Bilbao will welcome Rayo Vallecano to San Mamés in La Liga this Tuesday as both sides look to find some winning form with the two experiencing a mixed bag of emotions so far in 2020/21.

The home side are coming off the back of a 0-0 with Atletico Madrid, which although far from something to shout and cheer about, is definitely worth noting considering the La Liga champions have started off in unbeaten style.

Bilbao have also registered a 1-1 draw with Barcelona and in both these fixtures against the giants of Spain, Marcelino García Toral’s men have shown great defensive resilience that might just be the catalyst for them striving for a top eight finish for the first time in three seasons.

Elsewhere, Bilbao have managed to beat Mallorca and Celta Vigo thus far, as well as another draw with Elche, all of which puts the club in a commendable fifth place right now in La Liga, ahead of the likes of Barcelona and Sevilla.

Indeed, Bilbao are unbeaten so far, but they still need to rack up more points and victories in order to really establish themselves as serious contenders for the European spots as the season goes on.

As for Vallecano, their return to La Liga hasn’t been disastrous by any means, but with two defeats, two wins and a draw, the club are stuck in ninth and will need a win here if they are to steer further away from the relegation zone.

On one hand, Vallecano have managed to open up a six-point gap on the bottom three early on, but on the other hand, all eight of their league goals so far have come in the past three games, which begs the question as to just how good their form actually is.

These past three fixtures have seen them beat Getafe 3-0, draw 1-1 with Levante and beat Granada 4-0, which for a team returning to the top flight of Spanish football is quite incredible. Only time will tell if this is a story for the season rather than a purple patch in their campaign. Either way, it has been a positive start to the 2021/22 season.

What makes these two recent wins all the more impressive from Vallecano is not just the scorelines, but how they have seen six different goalscorers, including Radamel Falcao, who scored on his return to La Liga.

Forebet predicts a relatively easy one for Bilbao here, as their form has just been too good early on compared to Vallecano.
