Inter and Real Madrid set to kick off Group D with high-scoring thriller

Inter Milan welcome Real Madrid to the San Siro on Wednesday as UEFA Champions League Group D gets underway in style.

With Ukrainian side Shakhtar Donetsk and Moldovan minnows Sheriff Tiraspol also in Group D, both Inter and Real Madrid are expected to reach the knockout phase with ease.

Let's start by looking at the hosts, Inter Milan, who have made an impressive start to the 2021/22 campaign.

The Italians have picked up two wins and one draw from their opening three Serie A games and remain unbeaten this term.

Inter have netted over 1.5 goals in all three of their matches this season, thrashing Geona 4-0 and Verona 3-1 before drawing 2-2 with Sampdoria last time out.

Joaquin Correa and Lautaro Martinez both have two goals to their name, while Edin Dzeko, Arturo Vidal and Hakan Calhanoglu all have a goal and an assist under their belt.

Following a poor European campaign last season, it is worth nothing that Inter have only managed to win one of their last six Champions League matches.

On the flip side, Real Madrid have only lost one of their previous seven Champions League games and head into the new campaign as group favourites.

Just like Inter, Los Blancos are also unbeaten this season, having claimed three wins and one draw in La Liga.

Real Madrid hammered Alaves 4-1 on the opening weekend before drawing 3-3 with Levante. They then beat Real Betis 1-0 before crushing Celta Vigo 5-2 on Sunday.

The evergreen Karim Benzema netted a hat-trick last time out, while new signing Eduardo Camavinga also grabbed a debut goal.

Averaging just over three goals per game, Real Madrid are the top scorers in La Liga, having scored 13 goals across their opening four matches.

Head-to-head: Funnily enough, Inter Milan and Real Madrid met during the group stage of the previous Champions League campaign.

Los Blancos won both meetings, picking up a 3-2 victory on home soil before claiming a 2-0 win at the San Siro.

Team news: Inter Milan will be without injured trio Stefano Seni, Alessandro Bastoni and Gabriel Brazao on Wednesday.

As for Real Madrid, Toni Kroos, Dani Ceballos, David Alaba, Luka Jovic and Gareth Bale could all miss the trip to Italy through injury.

This is destined to be a lively encounter between two top teams. With that in mind, we are likely to see plenty of action at both ends of the pitch.

Forebet predicts that Inter Milan and Real Madrid will produce a high-scoring draw on Wednesday, with over 3.5 goals expected.
