Galatasaray need miracle in UCL qualifying after suffering first-leg thrashing to PSV

It’s safe to say that Galatasaray have a mountain to climb in order to qualify for the 2021/22 UEFA Champions League.

The Turkish giants welcome PSV to Istanbul on Wednesday for the second leg of the UCL qualifier, following a 5-1 first-leg victory for the Dutch outfit.

Israeli forward Eran Zahavi netted a hat-trick last time around, while former Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich star Mario Gotze bagged a brace.

Emre Kilinc scored a consolation for Galatasaray, but the visitors only managed to record one shot on target and also saw just 36% possession.

Meanwhile, PSV chalked up 16 attempts – eight of which were on target – and made almost twice as many passes as the Turkish side.

Including pre-season friendlies, Galatasaray headed into the first leg on an eight-match winning streak in all competitions.

However, they were completely outclassed by PSV and now have very little chance of qualifying for the Champions League.

It is worth noting that each of Galatasaray’s six games have produced over 2.5 goals, with five of them dishing up over 3.5 goals.

Following a strong end to the 2020/21 Eredivisie season, PSV are currently enjoying a 12-game unbeaten run in all competitions.

The Dutch side recorded three wins and one draw in four pre-season friendlies before totally humiliating Galatasaray last week.

In fact, PSV have only lost one of their last 18 outings in all competitions – picking up 12 wins and five draws in the process.

If they can pick up where they left off last season and hit the ground running this term, PSV will be a forced to be reckoned with in 2021/22.

Head-to-head: Although Galatasaray and PSV have met eight times over the year, the Turkish club have only managed to claim two wins.

PSV have been Galatasaray one six occasions since 1987, with three straight victories coming between 2006 and 2021.

Team news: Omar Elabdellaoui, Taylan Antalyai, DeAndre Yedlin, Emre Akbaba and Jimmy Durmaz are all currently sidelined for one reason or another.

PSV, on the other hand, will be without injured trio Richard Ledezma, Maxime Delanghe and Maximiliano Romero on Wednesday.

Considering PSV’s remarkable record in this fixture, it will be extremely difficult for Galatasaray to overturn the mammoth deficit on Wednesday.

Forebet predicts that PSV will keep a clean sheet on their way to recording a low-scoring victory in the second leg.
