Dijon to open account in Ligue 2 opener against Sochaux

Dijon will need to shrug off what was a particularly wretched campaign last season in the French Ligue 1 which ultimately ended in despair with Dijon finishing rock-bottom of the domestic top flight with just 21 points to their name.
A new season brings renewed optimism though and Dijon will start their Ligue 2 campaign with a home fixture against Sochaux who finished in 7th place at the end of the regular season but a significant 13 points shy of the top five.
Despite recording a last-ditch 1-0 win away from home at Saint-Etienne on the final day of the season, it was a case of being too little too late for Dijon who were duly relegated and they return to the French second tier for the first time in 5 years.
Dijon haven’t covered themselves in glory in their pre-season games either as the hosts have lost three of their four matches played, including a 2-1 loss to Monday night’s opponents, Sochaux, but they’ll be hoping they can hit the ground running at their Stade Gaston-Gérard.
Sochaux produced a creditable 7th place finish in last season’s Ligue 2 campaign but in truth were some way off from making a serious challenge on the top five clubs in the French second tier, being 13 points adrift by the end of last term.
Sochaux’s situation wasn’t helped by the fact that the visitors lost their last three league matches on the trot, following defeats incurred against Dunkerque, Clermont and Auxerre respectively.
Indeed, Sochaux ended last term with just one win under their belts from their final eight matches of the season and this resulted in Sochaux’s season fizzling out in disappointing fashion.
The visitors ended the campaign without an away win from their last four outings on the road, scoring just a single goal but conceding a total of six in reply and they’ll be up against a Dijon outfit who’ll no doubt be keen to assert their authority upon the visitors as they seek a swift return to the big time.
It’s been a while since these last two teams met but Dijon are unbeaten in their last three league meetings at home against Sochaux and the hosts will be keen to produce a winning start here.
