Paraguay to frustrate Argentina in the Copa America
3755

After two matchdays in the Copa America 2021, Argentina are level on points with Chile at the top of Group A. The two rivals are also level on goal difference.

On Monday night (Tuesday European time) Argentina face off with Paraguay, who sit third in Group A after playing one match.

The Paraguayans defeated Bolivia 3-1 to start the tournament, but while Argentina have played twice, Eduardo Berizzo’s team have played only once.

Argentina’s Lionel Messi has led the way for the side scoring against Chile and leading the team past Uruguay in match No. 2. Argentina have scored just two goals at the Copa America despite their talent.

Paraguay had to come from behind versus Bolivia to claim their 3-1 victory. An Erwin Saaverda penalty for Bolivia gave them the lead.

Paraguay’s Romero Gamarra levelled the score in the 62nd minute and Angel Romero added two more over the next 18 minutes.

Although underdogs to win on Monday, Paraguay can certainly frustrate Messi and company. This is especially true with Argentina struggling to score goals against Chile and Uruguay. On paper, Argentina have played the two most difficult teams in the group already.

Argentina are unbeaten in four straight games with three draws and one win. Paraguay are blowing hot and cold. Their last three games finished in one win, one draw, one loss.

Lionel Scaloni’s team lead the all-time series against Paraguay with 58W-34D-16L. These teams last met in November 2020 in CONMEBOL World Cup qualifying.

Romero’s first-half penalty put Paraguay into the lead. Nico Gonzalez found the back of the net just before halftime to level the scores.

The game finished 1-1 with neither side able to make the breakthrough in the second period. If Paraguay are able to win the match on Monday, it will position them well to progress to the knockout stage as group winners.

Despite struggling at the Copa America with just two goals after two matches, Argentina are still second favourites behind Brazil to win the tournament.

Sportsbooks have them at 3/1 to win the tournament before Monday’s game versus Paraguay. Berizzo’s team are at odds of 25/1 to win the competition.

Argentina’s defence proved to be the difference versus Uruguay. They allowed a mere four shots with zero of the ageing Sky Blues’ shots hitting the target. The defence could be the difference again as the attack fails to ignite.

Like their match in November, this should be low scoring with under 2.5 goals scored and a score draw. A 1-1 scoreline looks possible.
