Low-scoring affair between Argentina and Uruguay

Argentina were left frustrated by their 1-1 draw with Chile in Monday night’s Group A opener and this result became Argentina’s third stalemate on the trot following previous draws with Chile and Colombia in 1-1 and 2-2 draws, both in recent World Cup qualifiers.

Nevertheless, Argentina extended their unbeaten run in all competitions to 14 matches overall, which consists of seven wins and seven draws.

So perhaps the prospects of a straight win here for Argentina, especially on neutral ground, may be a tall order.

The draw has obviously been prevalent in Argentina’s recent results and this was the outcome in Argentina’s previous encounter with Friday’s Copa America opponents, Uruguay, in their last meeting as the two nations drew 2-2 in an international friendly back in November 2019.

Results in the Copa America have been a little more inconsistent where Argentina have been concerned though as they’ve managed to achieve just three wins out of their last eight matches in the tournament which came in the form of victories over Qatar, Venezuela and Chile, but also includes three losses and two draws as well.

Onto Uruguay, and they start their Copa America campaign with this tricky clash against Argentina in Group A and they head into this opener on the back of three matches without a win in recent World Cup qualifiers following a 2-0 loss to Brazil along with back-to-back draws with Paraguay and Venezuela.

Uruguay have also produced some solid displays of late though as they’ve lost just two of their last 12 matches in all competitions.

They were to Ecuador and Brazil in the South American section of the World Cup qualifiers.

Results away from home have also been solid as Uruguay have put up stubborn resistance on their travels, losing just once in their previous 10 matches on the road in all competitions and includes five wins and four draws.

Notable wins against Chile, Costa Rica, Hungary and Colombia should give Uruguay a decent chance of getting something out of this clash with Argentina, while previous results in the Copa America have seen Uruguay lose just one of their last five matches.

The previous two meetings between Argentina and Uruguay have both ended in stalemate in 2-2 and 0-0 draws respectively.

Therfore, Uruguay may well frustrate their opponents again in this encounter too in what could be a low-scoring encounter.
