Portugal to Start Title Defence in Hungary

We must wait until the 15th of June to see the defending European champions in action for the first time. Portugal meet Hungary at the Groupama Aréna in Budapest and the Portuguese will see this as the perfect opportunity to begin their campaign with a victory.

However, Hungary have home advantage and will be hoping the fans that are allowed inside the stadium can give them the edge. Hungary qualified for the tournament via the Nations League playoffs.

They defeated Bulgaria 3-1 in the semi-final before overcoming Iceland in the final thanks to a late winning goal.

Hungary finished fourth in their qualifying group having won 4 and lost 4 of their 8 fixtures. They were only 2 points adrift of second place Wales and went into the final round of matches with a chance of qualification.

The Hungarian team are on an 11 match unbeaten run coming into the tournament and they have recorded victories over Bulgaria, Serbia, Iceland, Turkey, San Marino, Andorra, and Cyprus.

They have started their 2022 World Cup qualifying campaign with 7 points from 3 games, including a 3-3 draw at home against Poland.

Hungary reached the Round of 16 at the 2016 European Championship having finished top of their group on 5 points. They picked up a point against Portugal in a high scoring draw but were comfortably defeated by Belgium in the knockout stages.

Portugal come into the match having qualified for the tournament by finishing second in Group B. They were the favourites to top the group but finished behind Ukraine having dropped 4 points against them.

Portugal were also held to a 1-1 draw at home by Serbia and were not at their best throughout qualification.

They have since started their 2022 World Cup qualifying group and Portugal have defeated Azerbaijan and Luxembourg plus picked up a point in a 2-2 draw in Serbia.

Portugal come into the tournament on the back of a 6 match and unbeaten run and they have tasted defeat only once in their 15 most recent games in all competitions.

Portugal have been tough to beat at the European Championships in recent times and they have lost only one of their last 11 matches in the competition.

They went undefeated throughout the 2016 tournament but managed to win only one game inside 90 minutes.

Team news and Hungary will be without their best attacking player as Dominik Szoboszlai is injured. Ádám Szalai could start the game as the only striker and the experienced 33 year old is also the captain of the team.

Portugal have plenty of options throughout the squad and it will be interesting to see who partners Rúben Dias in central defence. Cristiano Ronaldo will start in attack and the likes of João Félix, Diogo Jota, Bruno Fernandes, and Bernardo Silva will all be hoping to play.

We saw plenty of goals the last time these two teams met at the European Championship in 2016 and could be in for more of the same in this match.

Hungary have the home advantage and this may not be as straight forward for Portugal as many people believe. A high scoring draw is not out of the question.
