Championship - Midweek Review

Tuesday and Wednesday night’s brought as a full slate of fixtures in the Championship, so here’s a quick re-cap of the events involving teams at the top and the bottom of the division as the race for promotion along with the fight against relegation heats up, and a look ahead to the pick of the weekend’s fixtures.

It’s a three-horse race for the top two automatic promotion spots…

Let’s take it from the top, starting with Norwich City who reclaimed top spot following their 3-2 home win over Hull City.

Leeds United returned to 2nd place after Norwich’s win over Hull City, but the Yorkshire outfit grabbed another important three points with a 3-0 win at a rejuvenated Reading outfit, with Marcelo Bielsa’s side beginning to look like genuine promotion contenders.

Yorkshire rivals, and 3rd placed Sheffield United also maintained their solid results on Tuesday night with a 2-0 home win against Brentford which has kept them in touch with the top two in the Championship. Saturday’s local derby with Leeds United at Elland Road in the early kick-off promises to be a real cracker.

West Brom were the only other team in the play-off pack to register a win when they despatched Swansea City 3-0 at The Hawthorns, handing The Baggies their first home win in seven matches.

The three teams below them, Middlesbrough (1-2 v Preston North End), Derby County (0-0 v Stoke City) and Bristol City (1-1 v Ipswich Town), all failed to win.

No change at the bottom, but a lifeline for Rotherham United

At the bottom of the Championship, Ipswich Town recorded yet another draw as the Tractor Boys made it 5 draws from their last 6 matches with a 1-1 draw at Bristol City, while second from bottom club, Bolton Wanderers, suffered a fourth defeat in five matches when they lost 2-0 at home to Sheffield Wednesday.

Rotherham United enhanced their chances of Championship survival with a much needed 2-1 win away at seemingly disinterested QPR, and The Millers are now level on 36 points with Reading who lost at home to Leeds United.

Millwall also secured a valuable three points with a surprise 2-0 win at Birmingham City, while QPR’s decline continued at Loftus Road.

The pick of the fixtures this weekend…

Without doubt, the Yorkshire local derby between 2nd placed Leeds United and 3rd placed Sheffield United at Elland Road in the lunchtime kick-off, with just 2 points separating the two teams.

Aston Villa (8th) v Middlesbrough (5th)

Rotherham United (22nd) v Norwich City (1st)

Wigan Athletic (21st) v Bolton Wanderers (23rd)

Swansea City and Millwall are not in action this weekend.
