Clean sheets a start for Allardyce at Everton

Clean sheets a start for Allardyce at Everton

Everton are comfortably in midtable in the Premier League under Sam Allardyce after a horrendous start to their top-flight campaign.

The Toffees are ninth in the table after a rather lacklustre 0-0 draw at West Brom on Boxing Day. Although the Toffees attacking play was limp, the Merseysiders once again kept a clean sheet in the Premier League.

Since Allardyce took the reins at Goodison Park, the Toffees have kept four clean sheets in six league outings, conceding just two goals in the process. Their recent defensive performances are a far cry from their early season defensive displays when they struggled to keep the opposition from scoring three or four times a game.

Everton now look like a typically well-organised Sam Allardyce team. No opposition team will beat the Toffees easily with Allardyce in charge. It is not pretty at times, but the former West Ham bosses methods are effective.

The attacking play will improve, as Allardyce puts his mark on the team. By his own admission, the Everton job is his biggest club job, so the attacking play will need to improve for the experienced boss to last on Merseyside.

The former West Ham boss has been criticised for the style of play his teams produce. However, his style has been restricted by the quality of players at his disposal.

At Everton, he has a number of quality attacking players including Gylfi Sigurdsson, Wayne Rooney and Yannick Bolasie. The clubs hierarchy are also keen to back the team’s boss, so he should have funds available to spend in the next two transfer windows.

Evertonian’s will not be too concerned with the fact that their team are not producing great football at the minute. Most will be glad the team are no longer letting the opposition score at will. They will hope that the clean sheets are just the foundations for better all-around performances in the future.
