Romelu Lukaku’s goal tally is hard to ignore

There has been plenty of transfer talk surrounding the future of Everton and Belgium striker Romelu Lukaku of late. The 23-year-old rejected an offer of a contract extension on Merseyside earlier this week.

Lukaku still has over two years left on his contract but is now being heavily linked with a move away from the Toffees this summer, with former club Chelsea and Manchester United reportedly leading the race to sign the striker.

In truth, Lukaku’s performance in front of goal is hard to ignore this season. The big striker is now the top goalscorer in the Premier League with 21 goals this season after bagging a brace in a 4-0 win over Hull City on Saturday.

In doing so Lukaku became the first Everton player since Gary Lineker in 1986 to score 20 league goals. That summer the England striker moved on to Spanish giants Barcelona and it seems it could be a matter of history repeating itself and their star striker leaving the club.

Lukaku recently received both praise and criticism for comments about Everton’s ambition and transfer policy. The striker does have a point, as when majority shareholder Farhad Moshiri arrived he promised big money signings, but the club broke even over the summer. They did spend over £30million in the January transfer window, though.

Lukaku is obviously becoming impatient at Everton. He cannot wait around for boss Ronald Koeman and Farhad Moshiri to build a team capable of challenging for the top four.

For other clubs looking in from the outside, it would be hard to ignore Lukaku. He has got into double figures for the last five seasons in the Premier League. Considering that Lukaku is only 23 years old that is quite an incredible statistic.

If Everton can keep Lukaku this summer, then they may be able to build something special in the future. If not then no doubt the Belgian striker will keep adding to his impressive goals tally elsewhere.
