Manchester United game vital for Chelsea
Chelsea head into Sunday afternoon’s home game against Manchester United in the bottom half of the Premier League table.
The campaign has obviously not gone the way that most expected it to for the reigning Premier League champions. Jose Mourinho sacked before the end of the year and the team struggling in the bottom half of the table was not what fans, or anybody expected really.
It now looks near impossible for the Blues to challenge for the top four and the Champions League places this season, which makes Europe’s elite competition the clubs priority this season.
The Champions League last 16 ties are coming in the next few weeks and the Blues have been handed a difficult draw against big-spending French outfit PSG. The reigning Premier League champions will need to be at their best to defeat Zlatan Ibrahimovic and co.
Guus Hiddink’s side have built up a nice unbeaten run of eight games in the Premier League and will need that momentum to carry them into that difficult clash with the French side.
Chelsea’s performances have improved since the veteran Dutchman arrived in December, but they are simply not winning enough games. Three consecutive home draws illustrates that perfectly.
To be in the sort of form needed to progress to the latter stages of the Champions League, the Blues will need to be in confident mood. A win over Manchester United would be the perfect way to start the ball rolling on a winning run.
With another home game against Newcastle to come next weekend, Chelsea have the chance to build up a good head of steam before that vital Champions League clash. However, victory over United may just hold the key to Hiddink’s side progressing to the latter stages of Europe’s elite competition.
