This match is the start of four important days in the season for Marseille, who also face Monaco on Wednesday night in the Coupe de France Round of 16.  A win in both matches could lead to a very exciting finish to the season for Marseille fans but defeat may bring a premature end to their campaign.

Trends show Marseille to be a very inconsistent team this season and recent statistics show they have won four and lost four of their last eight matches in all competitions.  Two damaging defeats at the start of 2017, a 4-1 loss at home to Monaco and a 3-1 defeat at Lyon ended any faint hopes Marseille had of reaching the third Champions League qualifying place.  However, in the lead up to this game, one glance at Marseille’s home record shows a team who could be capable of defeating PSG on Sunday night.

Marseille have lost just one match at the Stade Velodrome in all competitions this season, winning ten and drawing three.  Other than the match against Monaco, who have been scoring freely, Marseille have been excellent in defence at home, conceding only 7 goals in fourteen games.  In Ligue 1, Marseille have kept ten clean sheets at home, which is a very impressive record and one which Rudi Garcia will hope to build on this weekend.

PSG arrive in the south of France having been held at home to a 0-0 draw by Toulouse last weekend.  Having comprehensively defeated Barcelona at the Parc des Princes just five days earlier, it was a disappointing result and Unai Emery’s team missed the chance to close the gap on Monaco at the top of the table.  PSG are unbeaten in their last fourteen matches in all competitions and have won their last four away from home in Ligue 1.  However, defeats at Toulouse, Montpellier and Guingamp show PSG can be beaten away from home and with Marseille’s strong home record this season, they could add their name to the short list of teams who have defeated PSG this season.

PSG have scored 8 goals in their last three away Ligue 1 games and it will be interesting to see them come up against Marseille’s strong home defence.  Marseille have struggled when coming up against the Parisian giants of late and the draw at the Parc des Princes in October, was the first time they have avoided defeat in eleven games in all competitions.  However, the 0-0 in Paris will give Marseille confidence they can get a positive result in this match and it wouldn’t be a surprise to see them record their first win over PSG since 2011/12.  Marseille to win and keep a clean sheet can be backed at very attractive odds and makes a tempting bet for this match.
