Derby can make life difficult for Leicester

Leicester City’s season just keeps slumping from bad to worse. The reigning English champions are just a point above the relegation zone after Sunday’s 3-0 home drubbing by Manchester United.

To make matters worse the Foxes face a difficult FA Cup third round replay against Championship Derby on Wednesday night. The first game finished 2-2 at Pride Park, but Claudio Ranieri’s side were unconvincing against the team against their fellow Midlander’s.

Heading into this game the Foxes look in crisis and part of that crisis has been caused by some terrible defensive displays of late. Ranieri’s side were so solid at the back in last season’s title-winning campaign.

Since the summer departure of French defensive midfielder N’Golo Kante, they seem to have fallen apart in defence. The poor defensive performances are illustrated perfectly by the fact that the Foxes have conceded two or more goals in four of their last five outings in all competitions.

Their attack has also been highly culpable in the recent slump, as the Foxes have failed to score in four of their last five outings in all competitions. The only exception to that goal drought was when Ranieri’s side scored twice at Pride Park.

Leicester’s one saving grace heading into this game is that they have a good home record against Derby, having won their last five home meetings with Derby in all competitions.

Derby’s recent form has been inconsistent in all competitions. Last time out Steve McClaren’s team suffered a narrow 1-0 defeat at highly flying Newcastle.

Prior to that defeat at Newcastle, the Rams had scored three or more goals in their previous three games in all competitions, so are likely to threaten a very brittle backline in this clash.

This game will not be easy for the home side and the draw is a likely outcome in normal time. Anything could happen in extra time and penalties, though. However, one thing is for sure the Foxes cannot afford another disappointing defeat.
