Scottish Premiership top four clash on action-packed Wednesday

Scottish Premiership top four clash on action-packed Wednesday

Football fans live for those big games, local derbies and potential title-deciders. They don’t come around too often, but Scottish Premiership fans are in for a real treat on Wednesday night, as first faces off against third and second comes up against fourth, in two games that could reignite the fight at the top of the table.

Of course, with Celtic now 22 points clear at the top, it would take some doing for Rangers or Aberdeen, who sit second and third respectively, to catch up to them, while just one more point is needed for Brendan Rodgers’ side to guarantee themselves a top four finish.

Although, while the title race appears to have been wrapped up, Celtic do have other ambitions to chase. They have yet to suffer defeat this season in the league, having won 21 and drawn one so far. With just 11 games left to play, they are in with a real shot of completing an unbeaten season, repeating the feat that they last achieved in 1897/98.

To do so, they will first have to come through Wednesday’s game against a high-flying Aberdeen side unscathed. Despite a blip in December, in which they lost two and drew one, Derek McInnes’ side have now recorded four consecutive victories. Attacking duo Niall McGinn and Adam Rooney have been full of confidence in recent weeks, having racked up five goals between them in just four games, but they will know that it will take a miracle to outscore Celtic on Wednesday.

Rodgers’ side are currently on a run of sixteen consecutive victories and have dropped just two points in league fixtures since May 2016. Likewise, they boast a 100% record at Celtic Park this season. It will take some doing for Aberdeen to break that run.

Elsewhere, Rangers travel to Hearts in what the away side will view as a must win game, given Aberdeen’s good run of form. Mark Warburton’s side had the chance to pull ahead in the race for second place prior to the winter break, but failed to capitalise, drawing one and losing one heading into the New Year. They got back to winning ways against Motherwell last time out, but just two points now separate them from their closest rivals, while Aberdeen also have a game in hand.

Knowing Aberdeen are likely to lose on Wednesday, Rangers have the chance to increase their lead to five points, and they will be confident of doing just that against a Hearts side that have slipped away from the top three in recent weeks.

Ian Cathro’s side have had a tough run of fixtures of late, having faced Rangers, Aberdeen and Celtic all in their last six matches. Despite heading into the first in third place, Hearts have claimed just four points since December 10th, which has put a nine point gap between them and Aberdeen. They have the chance to reduce that to just six points on Wednesday, but their form of late should make it three easy points for Rangers.
