On Monday night Villarreal and Atletico Madrid meet at El Madrigal with both teams desperate for a victory to get their campaigns back on track.

Villarreal’s form has been patchy of late, as the Yellow Submarine have failed to win in their last three and won just two of their last six La Liga outings.

One positive for the home side is that they have been strong at El Madrigal in La Liga, winning five of their last six league games, also suffering defeat in just one of their last seven league outings. They have also suffered just three defeats in their last 22 home La Liga outings.

Villarreal are currently sixth in La Liga but could move above Atletico with a victory. In fact, a win could see Fran Escriba’s team move up to fourth place, depending on results elsewhere. One negative is the fact that Escriba has faced Atletico six times in his managerial career and suffered defeat in all six games.

Atlético Madrid started the campaign with expectations of another La Liga title challenge. However, Diego Simeone’s side are currently fifth in the table, a massive 12 points behind league leaders and arch-rivals Real Madrid.

Los Rojiblancos have been on an inconsistent run of late, as they have won twice, lost three times and drawn one of their last six La Liga games.

Last time out in the Spanish top-flight, Atleti were held to a frustrating goalless draw at the Calderon by Espanyol. A win for Simeone’s team may be enough to move them up to third, again depending on results elsewhere.

Recent games between these two teams have been very tight, with under 2.5 goals scored in their last six meetings in La Liga. Forebet predicts that this game will end all square, which will do neither team much good in the race for Champions League qualification.
