Belgium and Bosnia-Herzegovina could be a cracker
Belgium under former Everton boss Roberto Martinez play their second World Cup qualifier against Bosnia-Herzegovina on Friday night.
On paper it would seem like the Red Devils will be clear favourites. However, the Bosnians have been in good form of late. The visitors kicked off their qualifying campaign with a 5-1 trouncing of Estonia. The win took the Bosnians to the top of the group.
Four victories in their last five outings show that Mehmed Bazdarevic’s side have hit form just at the right time to make an impact in World Cup qualifiers. They will need to continue that good form to have any chance of qualifying for the World Cup.
Despite underperforming at Euro 2016, Belgium are considered the favourites to win Group H and earning an automatic spot at the 2018 World Cup. Martinez has a lot of quality available to him, even without the injured Vincent Kompany, Kevin De Bruyne and Mousa Dembele.
Belgium head into this game with an inferior head-to-head record against Bosnia-Herzegovina, having won twice in the six meetings between these two teams.
The Red Devils did come out on top in the Euro 2016 qualifiers, though, winning one game 3-1 and drawing the other 1-1.
Martinez’s side opened their campaign with a 3-0 win in Cyprus with Everton’s Romelu Lukaku grabbing a brace. The 23-year-old has been in good form at club level and will be the Red Devils main attacking threat in this clash.
Belgium will no doubt fancy their chances of making it two wins from two qualifiers. However, Bosnia will be full of confidence following a good run of form and will be eying a positive result in Brussels.
The home side are likely to win this clash, but it promises to be a highly intriguing clash between two very good teams.
