West Ham can get back on track against Middlesbrough
West Ham have enjoyed a terrible start to their Premier League campaign, but Saturday’s game with Middlesbrough at the London Stadium gives the Hammers the chance to kick-start their season.
Five defeats in their first six Premier League games this season has seen Slaven Bilic’s team slip into the relegation zone. It’s all a far cry from last season’s seventh-place finish in the top-flight.
At times the Irons were highly entertaining last season, but that attacking verve was accompanied by some poor defensive work toward the end of the campaign. Those poor defensive displays have stretched into the beginning of this campaign.
Their attacking displays have had nowhere near the same verve or effectiveness of last season either. However, the visit of travel-sick Middlesbrough to the London Stadium offers the Hammers hope of a revival of their fortunes.
Boro have one just one of their last 16 away games in the Premier League. Granted most of those away games came in their previous stint in the top-flight, but still the north east side should represent vulnerable opponents for Dimitri Payet and co.
Aitor Karanka’s side started the campaign off in a decent fashion, picking up five points from their first three top-flight games. Reality then set in as the top-flight new boys have now suffered three consecutive defeats and conceded seven goals in the process.
Both teams will head into this game in low spirits due to their recent poor runs of form. However, West Ham does have more quality in their ranks than the visitors. Bilic needs the likes of Payet, Manuel Lanzini and Simone Zaza to start showing up for his team.
Boro have been poor at the back in recent games, so the Hammers will see this as a very winnable game and should get back on track in this clash.
