West Ham will find Southampton tough opponents
It’s fair to say that West Ham have not had the best of starts to their Premier League campaign. On Sunday the Hammers welcome Southampton to the London Stadium, as Slaven Bilic’s side look to rediscover their league form.
Last time out in the EFL Cup the Irons needed a stoppage-time Dimitri Payet goal to defeat League Two outfit, Accrington Stanley. The display did very little to lift the mood at the club, although Bilic will hope it will lift the spirits of the players slightly.
Southampton have not made a blistering start to a campaign themselves but have now recorded three consecutive wins in all competitions and not conceded in the process. The Saints have lost two of their five top-flight games this season, but they came at Manchester United and Arsenal, with the latter defeat a slightly unfortunate one.
Striker Charlie Austin has now scored four times in all competitions this season having hit form of late scoring the winning goal last time out against Swansea.
The 27-year-old has failed to hit the form of his Premier League debut campaign when he hit 18 goals with QPR, but he may now just rediscovering his top form.
West Ham’s defence has been this season, only bottom of the table Stoke City have conceded more than West Ham’s tally of 13 in the Premier League this season. Bilic will be unhappy that his side has conceded eight goals in their last two top-flight outings.
The Hammers need to kick-start their campaign and fast or they could be enduring a highly-disappointing campaign in the top-flight this season. Bilic’s side will certainly have to perform better than they have in recent weeks if they are to secure a victory in this clash.
Southampton’s defence now looks far more solid and the attacking play is coming together under French boss Claude Puel, so this may just be enough to frustrate the Hammers on home soil once again this weekend.
