A draw at PSG would be a good start for Arsenal

Arsenal has not been handed a terrible draw in the Champions League, as their group's top seed are PSG, high-spending but often under-achieving in the competition. On Tuesday night the Gunners travel to face Unai Emery’s team at the Parc des Princes.

The Gunners failure to negotiate the last-16 of the competition has now become something of a running joke for opposition fans.

However, their failure to reach beyond the first knockout stage is usually caused by the fact that they face a European heavyweight in the group stages and end up finishing second in their group, thus getting a harder draw in the last-16.

This season they have been drawn alongside PSG, who may be top seeds, but they are more of a European middleweight than a heavyweight. They could cause Arsenal problems, but they are infinitely beatable and should hold no fears for Arsene Wenger’s side.

Like Arsenal, PSG has enjoyed a mixed start to their domestic campaign and are unlikely to be a formidable force. Like any other season, though, a draw at the home of the group’s top seed would be a good result for the side from north London.

The Gunners head into the clash on the back of consecutive victories in the Premier League, with the last one coming in a last-gasp 2-1 win over Southampton on Saturday.

Even in game week one this game could be a defining one in the way the group shapes up. The Gunners will be highly confident of winning the reverse fixture at the Emirates Stadium.

PSG will be nervous following their mixed start to their defence of the Ligue One title and that could contribute to the Gunners head home with a positive result.

The Arsenal fans have been crying out for the team to make progress under Arsene Wenger, but very little seems to have been made over the last few seasons. Progression beyond the last-16 stage of the competition is a must if Wenger is to win over his sceptics at the club.
